Title:
“Source 1”
Footage: 2004; Edited and finished: 2006
duration: 3,18 min

“Source 1” is the attempt to show the life and dying of one universe in fast motion. I used frames of TV footage whilst zapping up and down the program-“ladder” and cut them up to short frame sequences or single frames. At the same time I cut up a film of a birth into short frame sequences and mixed them alternately with the other footage, so that one gets the impression, that masses of babies – humans- are being pushed into the world by the seconds – into a very loud, aggressive, uncomfortably colourful and unintelligible world. Like subtitles a text passes at the bottom of the film. It is the story of Brahma, which I found in the internet. It says that Brahma is the creator of the Universes and so and so many Universes come to pass during the lifetime of Brahma. When he awakes a Universe is being created and when he falls asleep one Universe comes to the end of existence and this happens every night of Brahmas life. I was drawn to this explanation of our existence and the monumental time-sequences of Universes being reduced to day-dreams. It reduces our existence to what it is – a tiny glimpse in a world where we get pushed into, to be dissolved instantly. Brahma breathes in his sleep and I wake him up through clapping my hands. I let two “Universes” pass in the film, whilst one can read the story of Brahma in the text that sliding past.

explaining also, how the creator is using found footage.: I used frames of TV footage whilst zapping up and down the program-“ladder” and cut them up to short frame sequences or single frames.
